Chapter 4: The 4 Laws of Behavior Change
Ideally, the cues that spark your habits should be obvious, visible, and easy to spot. For example, if you want to remember to take your medication each night, put your pill bottle directly next to the faucet on the bathroom counter.
Many people think they lack motivation when what they really lack is clarity. It is not always obvious when and where to take action. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for the time to be right to make an improvement.
“The process of behavior change always starts with awareness. You need to be aware of your habits before you can change them.”
This is why the “Point-and-Call” system used by the Japanese railway system is so effective. It raises the level of awareness from a nonconscious habit to a more conscious level.
